Close your eyes…take 10 seconds and picture what an average day looks like for you. I’m guessing something like this: you wake up, shower, get the kids ready (if applicable), eat breakfast, go to work, come home, have supper, maybe exercise, hang out with the kids (if applicable), watch TV, go to bed – and repeat. Does that sum up an average day for you?
Over the course of the last 10, 20, 30+ years, do you think you have developed any routines? I’ll go ahead and assume yes. You have learned that having a routine is a good thing, and it might even be something you are very proud of. A routine can be hard to establish, but once it’s there, you feel like you are firing on all cylinders – right?
What if I told you that there is a part of your routine that is actually hurting you; would you believe me? This is not something that you would think about on a day to day basis, but maybe it’s a characteristic that others observe in you. Whether you are trying to get ahead in your career, improve your health and fitness or enhance any other major component of your life, there is one thing that is likely holding you back from reaching your potential. The one thing holding you back from reaching your full potential, is your inability to feel comfortable, in an uncomfortable environment.
The one thing holding you back from reaching your full potential, is your inability to feel comfortable, in an uncomfortable environment.
When you notice that you have become too comfortable in an area of your life, it’s probably time to reassess your actions. For example, if you are exercising every day and not seeing any results, ask yourself why. A lot of people (but not you of course) come up to me and say “I’m eating healthy, exercising 4 times a week, and not seeing any results”. Generally, I respond one of two ways. 1) I ask them to what they eat on a daily basis and can immediately offer advice on their nutritional intake and 2) I notice that they are doing the same thing day in and day out, but hoping for a different result – which has been labelled as insanity.
When was the last time you did something that challenged you and forced you to step outside of your comfort zone? Maybe it’s a new exercise program that you fail to start because it seems too hard. Maybe it’s the idea you have to grow your business but you think “no one will like it”.
Do you think you might be to comfortable in an area of your life that you are trying to improve in?
What’s stopping you from making that leap of faith?
Once you start challenging yourself and immerse yourself in uncomfortable situations, only then will you learn to adapt and grow as an individual. Whether you are looking to improve your health and fitness, or take your business to the next level, are you too comfortable?
