It’s been quite some time since I wanted to write an article like this. I wasn’t sure how it would go over but I think it’s time for me to share my thoughts. I’m going to share with you a new fitness trend that’s becoming increasingly popular (and it’s not a good one). In my personal experience, this trend is becoming more and more common, and it’s not a good thing. Can you guess what I’m about say?
The trend I want to highlight today is this: people are waiting until their doctor tells them they need a lifestyle change, before they even think about their health. Has this ever happened to you?
I want to make this clear so there is no confusion. In the last 12 months, the number of people that have come to me for advice/tips after having a conversation with their doctor has increased. In my experience, people got to the doctor, realize that they need to start taking better care of themselves and then start looking to make changes.
This is not necessarily all bad (because well hey, at least they are ready to make a change). The thing that scares me about all of this is that if you know you live an unhealthy lifestyle, why wait to go to a doctor when you can start making changes yourself?
Many of you (myself included) trust your doctor and put a lot of faith into them. When they tell you it’s time to make a lifestyle change, the smart people often listen. When most people get this ‘wake up call’, the common changes a doctor might recommend include:
- reducing alcohol consumption
- increased focus on healthier foods
- being physically active
- and reduce/eliminate smoking (if this applies)
These are 4 of the most common health issues that I hear from 90% of my clients. Like many, they too also waited until they got a ‘wake up call’ from their doctor.
The good news: you can start making changes today (seriously, starting right now) that can help benefit your body, your brain and heart.
- Focus on real food: meats, fruits/vegetables, nuts/seeds
- Reduce alcohol consumption (you know if this applies to you)
- Go for a 20-30 minute walk 2-3/week
- Reduce or eliminate smoking altogether (and develop a new habit that keeps you occupied)
The major benefit of making these changes is simple: when you go back to your doctor for your next check-up, he/she will be beyond impressed. There is no magic pill or solutions to living a healthier lifestyle. It all starts with making one small change a day for the rest of your long life.
