May is Mental Health Awareness Month and it is the time of the year to educate more and more people about mental health and other related issues.
Sure, everyone knows that regular exercise and proper diet is good for the body. But if you’re not mentally prepared for it, it’s not going to work. When you want to get fit, it’s not just about getting the results – it’s about how you get there. You need a proper mindset to complete your goal, and that’s what we call ‘mental fitness’.
Now, let’s talk about 5 simple ways you can immediately improve your mental fitness while getting in shape.
1. Focus on one thing at a time
Letting your mind focus on one thing at a time is the most powerful way to improve your mental fitness. How many of you are taking ‘selfies’ while exercising or maybe recording your routine and then posting it instantly on your social media? Believe me, exercising without your cell phone will do wonders for your results.
2.Keep a journal
Having a journal of your food, exercise and personal habits will show you exactly the areas you need to work on. It can also help you keep track of your bad habits and find solutions to improve your health. Remember, you can’t manage what you don’t measure.
3. Set short term goals
It will be more realistic to set short term goals as your stepping stones along the path towards accomplishing your primary goal. It could be an hour of yoga twice a week, or doing 30 minutes of walking every morning, or you could also start reducing your salt or sugar intake by 5-10%. Too much exercise and extreme dieting can impact your overall health so it would be best if you do it one step at a time.
It doesn’t need to be strenuous at all! You don’t have to run a treadmill for 4 hours and be miserable afterwards. A good 30 minutes of sweating is enough to get the job done. You know what your body is capable of, and all you need is to keep yourself active 3-4 days a week. Not only will you get fit, it will also stimulate your brain and can help overcome depression and anxiety.
5. Have fun!
Life often gets way too serious but if you value happiness more than anything else, everything will follow. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym if that’s not your thing. Invite your family or friends to join you and get active! Yoga, dancing, zumba, swimming – they are all a form of exercise and a great way to get fit. Identify those activities you find enjoyable, while keeping yourself healthy – physically and mentally!
